As any menstruating woman knows, this is an absolute horrendous time of the month. The cramping, the bloating, the mood swings and just the sheer tiredness of it all can be debilitating for some women.

Menstruation is considered a cleansing cycle to help the body to release toxins. After researching this topic, I learned some interesting facts. Modern women have more cycles than of generations past. One reason for this, of course, is the role of women has changed significantly over the past few decades. Now, more than ever, women are expected to ignore their aches and pains to fulfill their career expectations.

In times past, women were stay-at-home wifes and mothers whose primary role in life was to take care of her family. Couples had more children, and, in turn resulted in less menstrual cycles because pregnant women generally do not have their periods.

Women paid more attention to how they felt too. If they needed to rest, someone else was usually around to help out with the children or the chores. Extended families were common with more than one generation living in a household. Sounds nice, doesn’t it? Many times I have wished for help with my children while I was sick or exhausted.

Some recommendations for easing menstrual misery include doing yoga regularly and panchakarma (cleansing) at least once a year but up to four times per year. Massaging the tummy with ayurvedic oils can also help alleviate some of the symptoms.

Namaste,
