Just Breathe!

Breath is such a spontaneous thing. When we are breathing well, we are relaxed and take no notice of our breath at all. But when we are winded, suddenly, we realize just how important breath really is. Let’s face it; we won’t live long if we don’t breathe.
But controlling your breath for health and relaxation is far from spontaneous and well worth the small effort involved.
Ever watch a sleeping baby? Now there is perfect breathing at its best! The lower belly rises up and falls without effort. Nice slow, deep breaths.
When we are stressed, however, breathing takes on an entirely new look. We breathe from our chests and shoulders. Our breaths become short and shallow.
So how can we control our breathing in a way that benefits our health? Slow breathing slows a rapid/stressed heart rate. Taking control of your breathing is the fasted and easiest way to calm yourself when stressed. Simply stop, take notice of your breathing and be sure that you are breathing from your lower belly instead of using your chest area. This small thing can lower blood pressure and heart rate, reduced amounts of stress hormones, reduce lactic acid build-up in muscle tissue, balanced levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood, improved immune system functioning, increased physical energy, and increase feelings of calm and well being. Not bad for something so simple.
The hard part is becoming conscious of your breathing on a regular basis. Leave yourself little reminders, and you’ll be “breathing easy” in no time!

OM…my gosh, how relaxing!
August 19, 2010 by Personal Alchemy

I was with some friends yesterday who do not know anything about Ayurveda, or meditation.
The topic of meditation came up, and there was a lot of joking about people “sitting around on the floor chanting om” (add a pair of crossed eyes and a scrunched up face to that explanation, and you get the idea of the opinion these folk have about meditation).
Well, I just had to set them straight. This of course, launched into a rather lengthy discussion about the ayurvedic lifestyle, and what meditation actually is. But interestingly enough, they seemed to understand the concept behind meditation. It was the chanting that escaped their understanding.
I thought I would recap on the reasons I gave for chanting “om”.
The word “om”, is not, in and of itself, an actual word. It is chanted, quite literally, for the sound which it produces. This sound is believed to transcend the barriers of time and space. It is used in reverence in Hindu prayer, and is attributed with healing abilities when used in meditation. The sound itself is considered, by many, to have divine power.
The symbol itself is representative of the three states of consciousness. Waking, dreaming, and deep sleep.
The word is comprised of three Sanskrit letters, which when put together, create the sound of “aum” or “om”. Chanting Om during meditation is incredibly relaxing, connective, and balancing.
So after this longwinded discussion, I got a call this morning. My friend had gone home and tried it. The first words out of her mouth were…. “OM….my gosh, how relaxing!”
I’d love to hear what chanting Om does for you! Please share with comment below, or and email.
Namaste

How to meditate (video)

I found this video on how to meditate. It’s good information for people who are trying to begin a meditation practice, but may be unsure of where to start. The animations are a bit strange for my tastes, but the information is good.
Namaste,
Tiffany

Personal Rituals

Personal Rituals are a very individual thing. You may not realize it, but you have your own personal rituals already. From your routine in the morning, to the order in which you do things when going to bed at night, personal rituals are already a part of your life.
The trick is, to change those rituals just a bit, so that they are helping you to reduce the stress in your life.
One important change is in the way you care for your body. You may exercise and eat right, but there is always more you can do here.
One very important personal ritual that is often overlooked, is self massage. Massage in any form lowers your heart rate and blood pressure, and has many many other positive effects on the body, including stress relief. We often feel we don’t have time for this type of personal ritual. But the trick is to just make the time. It doesn’t have to take an hour out of your day. Try rubbing your feet with a nice lavender oil before going to bed, or moisturizing your body with an invigorating eucalyptus oil in the morning to get you going.
Meditation is also an important personal ritual, with many positive effects (similar to massage!) on the body. Just ten minutes a day can have a wonderful effect on your health. The same benefits can be had from a daily yoga practice.
The idea here, is to take the time to do these things, even if that time is just a few moments out of your day. The more you care for yourself, the better you’ll be able to care for those around you. So give it a try. What do you have to lose except your stress?
Do you have any personal rituals that help you unwind at the end of the day? I’d love to hear about them. email me, or post a comment! Either way, I love to hear from my readers.
Namaste,
Tiffany
