The Bindi

Bindi

Aside from looking pretty, Why do so many Indians wear red or decorative dots on their foreheads?

The red dot that many Indian women wear is called a “Bindi” (among other names).

Traditionally, Hindu women have worn the bindi to signify that they are married. However, in this modern age, it is becoming more of a decorative thing, worn by many Indian women of different marital status, ages, and religious beliefs.
The bindi is placed over the “third eye” for many reasons. The third eye is the forehead chakra, the chakra of spiritual energy. Some believe that the bindi prevents loss of this spiritual energy, and protects them against “evil”.

The bindi can be worn by either men or women. But most often, you will see it on women.

I love bindi’s. I think they have a certain appeal that is very feminine and attractive. While I do not wear one myself, I always admire the women that do. What a wonderful decoration for the body, whatever the intent or meaning behind it.
Do you wear a bindi? What does it mean to you personally? Why do you wear one? I would love to have you post your comment here, or send me an email.

Just Breathe!

August 30, 2010 by Personal Alchemy

Breath is such a spontaneous thing. When we are breathing well, we are relaxed and take no notice of our breath at all. But when we are winded, suddenly, we realize just how important breath really is. Let’s face it; we won’t live long if we don’t breathe.

But controlling your breath for health and relaxation is far from spontaneous and well worth the small effort involved.

Ever watch a sleeping baby? Now there is perfect breathing at its best! The lower belly rises up and falls without effort. Nice slow, deep breaths.

When we are stressed, however, breathing takes on an entirely new look. We breathe from our chests and shoulders. Our breaths become short and shallow.

So how can we control our breathing in a way that benefits our health? Slow breathing slows a rapid/stressed heart rate. Taking control of your breathing is the fasted and easiest way to calm yourself when stressed. Simply stop, take notice of your breathing and be sure that you are breathing from your lower belly instead of using your chest area. This small thing can lower blood pressure and heart rate, reduced amounts of stress hormones, reduce lactic acid build-up in muscle tissue, balanced levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood, improved immune system functioning, increased physical energy,  and increase feelings of calm and well being. Not bad for something so simple.

The hard part is becoming conscious of your breathing on a regular basis. Leave yourself little reminders, and you’ll be “breathing easy” in no time!

Personal Rituals

August 18, 2010 by Personal Alchemy

In this world of constant change, we frequently lose touch with our dreams, our hopes, and our desires. In order to keep up with the constant change, our focus becomes external. Our quest for happiness is reduced to an outward quest. A search for more of everything. As we amass more, we feel fragmented unable to find time for ourselves, let alone the time to perhaps pursue our hearts desire. As a result, we experience stress, fatigue, depression… maybe even illness.

Let us consider the alchemy that can transform our lives.
The word Alchemy, conjures up the romantic lore of a great wizard endowed with a secret wisdom.

Alchemy, however, is not the sole propriety of legend and lore. Alchemy is found everywhere. Especially in nature.

Consider the metamorphosis of the earthly caterpillar. She spins her cocoon, and in her own time, breaks free and takes flight… a brilliantly hued butterfly.

Alchemy occurs when a grain of sand creates friction in an oyster. And is then transformed into a lovely pearl.

The diamond, perhaps nature’s most astounding alchemical feat, begins as a lowly lump of coal, and after many years of pressure is transformed into an extraordinary gem.

Each of us in our heart desires peace, health, harmony and joy. And rightly so, for these are our birthright. In order to realize our birthright, we must trust that these gifts are indeed ours. We must surrender any belief that is contrary, and then we must claim the gift of peace, health, harmony and joy. We must do this daily. Sometimes even hourly. Particularly during times of darkness. We must practice releasing beliefs and habits that keep us from experiencing our birthright. In so doing, we soon develop clarity. We become stronger, more serene, and more able to love ourselves, and to love others.

I believe strongly in Personal Rituals. Those practices and routines that we may, or may not do on a daily basis that reconnect us with ourselves, and help us to regain focus. Even the simplest ritual performed while showering or bathing, can focus one on what is truly important in life. By directing awareness inward, we are able to commune with our most intuitive and creative self. The object of Personal Alchemy products is to support you in creating your own personal rituals, while doing those things that you already do, such as caring for your body. By performing daily rituals with mindfulness, and by using healing botanicals and essential oils, you can heal your body, mind and spirit.

Tiffany

The act of kindness

The act of kindness comes in many forms. From holding a door open for an elderly person, to cooking dinner for a neighbor who is sick in bed, kindness is good for the soul.

When I was pregnant, I remember being extra aware of the kindness of strangers. While I was a bit oversensitive, I would get very upset if I saw somebody who was not being kind. I distinctly remember an elderly woman who was struggling with a heavy door in a doctor’s office. Several people looked up to watch her struggle, but nobody got up to help her. Finally, I couldn’t take it anymore, and I managed to un-wedge my very pregnant self from the chair I was sitting in, to go help her. To this day, I wonder if those people who watched ever felt any remorse for not helping.

An act of kindness can be so small, and yet, it can mean the world to someone. I would have appreciated the help of a neighbor in mowing my lawn when I was 7 months pregnant. Instead, they went about mowing their own lawns, and just waved. It would have taken them 15 minutes to help me out (I was obviously struggling with the heavy lawn mower). But they didn’t.

I know this sounds like I’m just complaining, but I’m actually trying to make a point. If you can be in a state of consciousness, ever day, that allows you to take notice of the human plight, what a wonderful state of consciousness to be in. I think, that in our busy lives, we forget that it is an honor to help another human being. Whether it be a family member, friend or stranger.

If you meditate, try meditating on kindness, and see what happens. I think you’ll find that your world becomes a very different place, full of possibilities.

To quote the famous movie…. always remember to “pay it forward”. You will be paid back in ways you never imagined.

Namaste,

Tiffany

How to meditate (video)

I found this video on how to meditate. It’s good information for people who are trying to begin a meditation practice, but may be unsure of where to start. The animations are a bit strange for my tastes, but the information is good.

Yoga for your dosha

Yoga has long been practiced in Ayurveda. It’s so much more than exercise. It’s  a daily discipline, and it can help restore your health.

But did you know that there are yoga poses which are particularly appropriate for your dosha?

Here is an article by Lissa Coffey that tells more about the specific poses.

Personal Rituals

Personal Rituals are a very individual thing. You may not realize it, but you have your own personal rituals already. From your routine in the morning, to the order in which you do things when going to bed at night, personal rituals are already a part of your life.

The trick is, to change those rituals just a bit, so that they are helping you to reduce the stress in your life.

One important change is in the way you care for your body. You may exercise and eat right, but there is always more you can do here.

One very important personal ritual that is often overlooked, is self massage. Massage in any form lowers your heart rate and blood pressure, and has many many other positive effects on the body, including stress relief. We often feel we don’t have time for this type of personal ritual. But the trick is to just make the time. It doesn’t have to take an hour out of your day. Try rubbing your feet with a nice lavender oil before going to bed, or moisturizing your body with an invigorating eucalyptus oil in the morning to get you going.

Meditation is also an important personal ritual, with many positive effects (similar to massage!) on the body. Just ten minutes a day can have a wonderful effect on your health. The same benefits can be had from a daily yoga practice.

The idea here, is to take the time to do these things, even if that time is just a few moments out of your day. The more you care for yourself, the better you’ll be able to care for those around you. So give it a try. What do you have to lose except your stress?

Do you have any personal rituals that help you unwind at the end of the day? I’d love to hear about them. email me, or post a comment! Either way, I love to hear from my readers.

Namaste,
Tiffany
