How do you see yourself? (Positive Thinking – Part 3)

Ayurveda promotes positive thinking. In this three part series, we’ll look at positive thinking, and how to incorporate it into your life on a daily basis.
_______________________________________________________
What’s your self image like? How you see yourself can have a huge impact on your outlook in life. With women especially, we often spend so much time focusing on what we don’t like about ourselves, that we forget to notice what we do like.
After having a baby, weight loss has been excruciating for me. The pounds just won’t go away. It’s so easy to focus on this. To focus on how unhappy I am with my current weight, I forget to give myself positive encouragement.
I think it’s this way for most people. But there is hope. There is a way to get beyond this type of thinking.
I’ve found the easiest method is to focus on one thing that I really like about myself. I remind myself every day, that I like this part of myself. When I look in the mirror, and negativity sets in, I try to shift my focus to the positive. Even if I can only find ONE thing that I like about myself in that moment, it’s so much better to focus on that, than everything I don’t like.
What do you like when you look in the mirror? Your eyes, your hair, your nails, your skin, your shoulders? If you really look at yourself, you will find something. Just one thing is all you need. Build from there. If you like your eyes, focus on that. Before you know it, you’ll be saying, “you know, my chin is kind of nice to”. Keep building. A positive self image is so worth the effort. Confidence of this nature is very contagious. People flock toward people who truly like themselves. I’m not talking about conceit. I’m talking about a genuine respect for yourself, and what you look like.
You may be thinking, “well what about what’s on the inside?”. You’re correct. What’s on the inside of a person is vital. Far more important than looks. But in this culture, we are so dependant on our looks. We spend billions of dollars to make ourselves look better. Our entire identity can get caught up in how we feel about our looks. So while it is most important to love yourself for who you truly are, feeling confident about the way you look can be just as important. We need to like ourselves, inside and out. Once we have an affinity for both, a positive outlook just can’t be helped.

Enlighten Up

I don’t know about you, but I am a total news geek. I listen to NPR on my public radio station in the car every chance I get, especially if I am alone and can really listen to what is being said. With two small children, that is a rare situation for me. With all of that being said, the point of this post is to tell you about a new movie coming out and it is about yoga. The movie is entitled “Enlighten Up.”
While driving to a business class, I heard an interview with Kate, the filmmaker, and Nick, the subject of the movie. I was intrigued by what I heard, and I definitely have plans to see this movie at some point this year. Nick, apparently, was a skeptic and had only tried doing yoga a time or two. Kate wanted to prove that yoga is so much more than what the average American skeptic believes. They travel around the world to find out more about yoga and the reasoning behind it. You can visit the movie site here http://enlightenupthefilm.com/.

The act of kindness

The act of kindness comes in many forms. From holding a door open for an elderly person, to cooking dinner for a neighbor who is sick in bed, kindness is good for the soul.
When I was pregnant, I remember being extra aware of the kindness of strangers. While I was a bit oversensitive, I would get very upset if I saw somebody who was not being kind. I distinctly remember an elderly woman who was struggling with a heavy door in a doctor’s office. Several people looked up to watch her struggle, but nobody got up to help her. Finally, I couldn’t take it anymore, and I managed to un-wedge my very pregnant self from the chair I was sitting in, to go help her. To this day, I wonder if those people who watched ever felt any remorse for not helping.
An act of kindness can be so small, and yet, it can mean the world to someone. I would have appreciated the help of a neighbor in mowing my lawn when I was 7 months pregnant. Instead, they went about mowing their own lawns, and just waved. It would have taken them 15 minutes to help me out (I was obviously struggling with the heavy lawn mower). But they didn’t.
I know this sounds like I’m just complaining, but I’m actually trying to make a point. If you can be in a state of consciousness, ever day, that allows you to take notice of the human plight, what a wonderful state of consciousness to be in. I think, that in our busy lives, we forget that it is an honor to help another human being. Whether it be a family member, friend or stranger.
If you meditate, try meditating on kindness, and see what happens. I think you’ll find that your world becomes a very different place, full of possibilities.
To quote the famous movie…. always remember to “pay it forward”. You will be paid back in ways you never imagined.
Namaste,
Tiffany

Dream (Positive Thinking – Part 2)

Do you dream? I don’t mean while you are sleeping, I mean the kind of dreaming that carries you off on a cloud while you are wide awake.
Some call it dreaming, some day-dreaming, and even some call it planning. However you refer to it, you should do it, and often.
Dreaming big is part of what keeps us positive. It gives us something to work for and strive towards. Even the silliest dreams can give us hope and peace of mind.
Have you dreamt lately? We’ve all had a day dream or two, but done on a regular basis, this type of dreaming can be a real source of stress relief. The great part about it is that it can be done anywhere. (Okay, maybe AFTER you pull off the freeway. But you get the idea.)
What do you dream about? Now, keep in mind, I’m not talking about that recurring day dream you have about choking the co-worker in the cubicle next to you. I’m talking about dreams for the future. Anything from “what’s your dream job”, to “how would I spend a huge lottery win?”. We get so wrapped up in the negative aspects of life that we sometimes forget to dream in a positive way. Positive dreaming goes much further in relieving stress and balancing our spirit that negative dreaming does. So make sure your dreams stick to the lighter side of life.
What’s your focus? If dreaming is something you enjoy, put it to work for you! With movies like “The Secret” on the market today, the power of positive and focused thinking is really becoming more mainstream. If you have a goal you’ve been dreaming about, make sure you’re focusing on it intently. It may just happen!
All in all, dreaming has a wonderful impact on our way of thinking. Dream positive, and the rest of your thoughts can’t help but follow!

Horsin’ around? (Positive Thinking – Part 1)

How long has it been since you laughed so hard your sides and cheeks hurt? Felt one moment of pure bliss? Found shapes in the clouds? Jumped in a puddle? Rolled down a hill? Had a pillow fight? Jumped up and down on a bed, or built sand castles on the beach?
Part of being positive in life is remembering the child within us. The ability to look at the world through the eyes of a child is an ability that is hard to come by for many people. We get so busy and wrapped up in the stress and schedules of our every day lives, that we forget that there is more to life. Much more.
Being a new mom, I have first hand experience at acting “silly” in public. Anything to get my baby to shine that beautiful smile, and “make the angels sing”. (That’s how I refer to his giggles. Any sound that wonderful, has GOT to make the angels sing!) If he starts to cry, no matter where we are, I will do anything I can to change that cry to a giggle (No matter how strange it may appear to some).
I’ve found that by letting down my guard, and being willing to act silly, my view of the world has slowly been changing. You see, laughter is contagious. I have met more people while I was acting silly, than at any other point in my life. People feel comfortable walking up to me and talking to me. I’ve gotten some life stories you wouldn’t believe, just because somebody saw me playing with my baby at the grocery store.
There’s something that comes along with this willingness to act like a goofball. Suddenly, the world doesn’t seem so serious. You’re far more willing to shrug off the small stuff instead of letting it get to you.
Even if you don’t have kids, it’s so vital to connect with this side of you. We all have this within us. We just tend to block it out as we get older.
Get back in touch with the kid in you. This weekend, close the curtains, turn up the music, and dance naked in your living room. Go to the beach, and build the biggest sand castle you’ve ever built. Have lunch with a friend, and laugh like it’s going out of style. Tending to this part of you, will relieve so much stress in your life. After all, those little things that stress you will come and go. But good memories, last a lifetime.
