Ayurveda in Summer

With Summer nearly upon us, certain adjustments are necessary in the ayurvedic lifestyle to accommodate the body in the warmer months.

Summer is the season of Pitta. Heat abounds, and we must help our bodies cope with the warmer weather. Living in California, I can tell you that heat is definitely a contender in the fight between the seasons. Here are some things you can do to adjust to the scorching days of summer.

  1. This is the time of year to conserve your energy. Leisurely activities are best.
  2. Keeping the body cool is recommended, as overheating can cause a pitta imbalance.
  3. Rest and relaxation are in order. This is a great time for the typical “summer vacation”
  4. Eat cool, soft foods
  5. Avoid bitter and acidic foods
  6. Avoid alcohol, as this dehydrates the body
  7. Keep hydrated with plenty of water
  8. Surround yourself with calming soft colors and fragrances
  9. Take extra care of your feet, as warm weather shoes tend to leave feet cracked and dry
  10. Wear natural fibers such as cotton to allow your skin to breath

I’d love to know what you do to keep cool in the summer. Leave a comment below! I’d love to hear from you.

Namaste,
Tiffany

Unveil your bliss

For those of you that have visited the Personal Alchemy web site, you’ve undoubtedly seen the phrase “Unveil your bliss” on each page. That phrase is there for a reason.

But what does this mean? How do you unveil true bliss in your life? One should start by defining the word bliss, and what it means in your life specifically.

There is a sanskrit word, ”Ananda” which means bliss. Ananda is what puts meaning in our lives. It’s the thing that brings us happiness, in even the smallest of moments. It can be a moment in time, or a lifetime journey.

Think back to the last time you had a truly great belly laugh. The last time somebody told you they love you. The last time someone’s smile brightened your day, or an act of kindness warmed your heart.

This is Ananda. Those moments and feelings that put pure joy in our hearts. Can you remember the last time you pursued something that truly made you happy? This could be a hobby, a career, or a person. Either way, you felt pure joy, happiness, contentment, and reason for being, in that moment.

When your body is in balance, you have Ananda. When you have true health and vitality, you have Ananda.

So take a moment to think about what creates Ananda in your life. I’d love it if you would share it with me here at the blog. What brings bliss to your life? How do you “unveil your bliss”?

Namaste,
Tiffany

And the winner is……

The winner of the Mother’s Day Blog Contest is….

Sadie Sadie from All Natural Me. Here is the comment she posted.

My mother is amazing. She is definitely why I am an environmentalist today. Maybe it was the protest she took me to when I was ten years old to shout how we didn’t want a toxic incinerator in our back yard that initially inspired me.

My mother is a school teacher and continues to inspire me with her activism with recycling and land restoration on the school grounds.

Even at home, she is an eco-super star. Every spring, my mother cleans up a two mile stretch of road by herself and frees it from litter. She also is passionate about reusing paper and has been know to be pretty crafty with upcycling old greeting cards into fun place mats.

Cara, is a woman after my own heart.

I love you Mom!!!

This is what Sadie had to say about herself:

“Online, I’m known as Sadie from allnaturalme.com.  I run a website that promotes
eco-friendly issues and natural living in a fun and humorous way.
All Natural Me has connected with thousands of people over the years
and it’s been a great way to show just how much one person can do.

Offline, I am your typical crunchy green fanatical mama happily raising her cubs.
When I’m not changing poopy diapers or trying the change the world,
I enjoy dancing, sewing and eating organic chocolate.”

Thanks for posting your comment Sadie! I’ll be sending you and your amazing Mom a Personal Alchemy Body Cream in the scent of your choice. Congratulations on winning! Happy Mother’s Day.

Listen up!

mortar

Folks! If you are taking any Ayurvedic medicines, Click here - this is a ”must-read” and very important article. I encourage you to read it from beginning to end.

While it may appear at first that I am trying to tell you that Ayurvedic treatments are dangerous, what I’m actually trying to convey and encourage is the use of good common sense.

  1. Like any form of medicine, it’s never a good idea to self medicate. Please see a practitioner.
  2. If you travel to India, once again, do not self medicate. Don’t purchase Ayurvedic remedies that promise one thing or another, and trust the package/labeling. While India is an amazing country, their laws governing food and medicine are very different from ours.
  3. If you do see a practitioner, find out where your medicine comes from!!! These days, it’s not all that hard to have a practitioner prepare you a remedy made from herbs grown here (In most cases).
  4. Pay attention to the list of products in this article. Be sure you are not taking any of them!!!

Ayurveda is an extremely effective method of healing. But used improperly, it can also be harmful. Please, please, please…. pay attention to the remedies you purchase. Not all medicines are created equal!

To your health
Tiffany
