Dosha Diets (Part 1 – Vata)

Generally speaking, it is important for all doshas to allow time for each meal. To sit at a table, chew food thoroughly, and relax to allow for good digestion.

While this is obviously not typical of the American lifestyle, the more you can do to achieve this, the better off you’ll be.

Vata doshas: here are some guidelines to get you started. Keep in mind, however, that for a true evaluation of what is good for you as an individual, you should see an Ayurvedic practitioner.

  • Vata people should not obsess about a fat-free diet. It can actually do more harm than good. That said, you do want to be sure that the fats that you are getting are healthy fats. Try Ghee or Sesame seed oil. Olive oil is good to, as long as you don’t heat it very much. Use it more for balsamic dressings, or add to warm (not hot) foods for added nutrition.
  • Don’t eat or drink anything cold. Vata doshas need warmth in their nutrition.
  • Eat salty, sour and sweet foods. (No, this doesn’t give you permission to raid your local candy store – I’m talking about fruits and other natural foods)
  • Use plenty of spices in your cooking. Spices are wonderful for Vata doshas.

Food list – This list is a general overview. Some foods listed here may not be appropriate a Vata dosha simply because of an individual’s current constitution. Please see an Ayurvedic practitioner for an exact list of foods that appropriate just for you.

Grains: Oats, pasta, basmati rice, brown rice, white rice, wheat

Fruits: Cherries, grapes, kiwi, melon, oranges peaches pineapple, and plums
Veggies: Artichokes, asparagus, carrots, cucumbers, garlic, leeks, parsnips, and watercress

Dairy: Butter, cheese, milk, eggs, ghee, mayo and yogurt

Oils: Ghee, and all nut oils

Drinks: Hot chocolate, mineral water, and orange juice

Meats: Beef, cod, haddock, mackerel, sardines, and tuna

Again, this is just a loose description of what you should eat. Each person will be different and unique. But it will give you a place to start.

To your health

Paige, everyone has elements of the three doshas within us. Usually, one type is dominant but it is not uncommon to discover that a person is a dual doshic. What is your other dosha type?
